The Wichita Falls Police Department is trying to help curb crime in
neighboring communities throughout the city. On Saturday Wichita Falls
Police gave a free two-hour presentation to help locals keep their
community crime free.
More than 20 people showed up at the Martin Luther King Center in east
Wichita Falls to be part of the presentation.
Wichita Falls Police Officer Jeff Hughes said that they wanted to make
sure the folks out there were aware they were doing everything to take
away the opportunity from a bad guy.
Hughes reminded those in attendance that their homes outside
presentation could be an open invitation to criminals. One of the
biggest ways to prevent crime, according to Hughes is to use CPTED. Also
known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.
“The biggest site, that we are dealing with now, that we are endorsing
fully, is Nextdoor and it's simply just nextdoor.com,”
The site is free and helps locals set up a Virtual Community that they
can interact with from the comfort of their own home.
"With www.nextdoor.com it all happens in a web based program where if
you send something out it gets to that group or that person instantly,
they will get an alert on their phone or an email," said Hughes.
According to Hughes, he has already seen a positive impact locally from
the site and hopes it can continue to expand in Wichita Falls.

Among the more colorful characters of Leadville's golden age were H.A.W.
Tabor and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as “Baby
Doe”. Their history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West.
Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his
first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to
homestead in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or
perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines.
At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado
mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville
when he became its leading citizen. “Great deposits of lead are sure to
be found here.” he said.
As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make
Leadville's fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself,
so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt,
flour, and tobacco.『It was his custom to “grubstake” prospective
miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or
“grub”, while they looked for ore, in return for which he would get a
share in the mine if one was discovered. He did this for a number of
years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value.
Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came
in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because
he had lost too much money that way. These were persistent, however, and
Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time
won't make any difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats
to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return
for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They
picked a barren place on the mountain side and began to dig. After nine
days they struck a rich vein of silver. Tabor bought the shares of the
other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known
as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1 300 000 for Tabor in return for his $17
investment.
Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren hillside
just outside the town for $117 000. This turned out to be even more
fabulous than the Pittsburgh, yielding $35 000 worth of silver per day
at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later
became lieutenant governor of the state.

Stopping Yelling At Your Kids
Parenting is hard. If you're a parent, I'm sure that I don't need to
tell you that our job is a tough one. When you're managing children, it
can be difficult to remember that they are still learning. If you find
you are yelling at your kids more often than you want to, here are some
ways that can help you reduce the yelling. I've been working on this for
the past few months and I have to say, it's been amazing for both the
kids and me.
If you are having an argument with your child, you need to make sure you
both take the time to really listen. It gives both of you time to think
and really listen to each other, which is important. Kids are more
likely to listen to you if you listen to them!
One of your biggest struggles is to remind yourself of appropriate
expectations. You can't expect that your youngest acts as responsibly as
your oldest. You should lower what you expect – taking into
consideration things like their age – it can make a big
difference.
You should do your best to take a moment before yelling and take in a
deep breath. It makes a world of difference for you. Instead of yelling,
you'd better whisper. It can also help diffuse any situation by making
things quieter, not louder. Besides, the more time you spend with your
kids, the better you'll get at communicating with them. You're both more
likely to understand each other.
If your children aren't listening or it seems they only don't listen to
you, you don't take it personally. You should remind yourself that your
kids are still learning and they're not going to be perfect.
操作提示:句子正确选择下拉选项框为“T”;句子错误选择下拉选项框为“F”。
As a parent, you may know that parenting is an easy job.
2. Listening to each other is a good way to stop argument between
parents and their kids.
3. Usually younger kids behave less responsibly than elder
children.
4. Parents should lower their expectations for their kids.
5. Both yelling and whispering can help make things quieter.

问题 48: 21. Passage 7
For anyone who hates doing yard work, your new best friend may have
arrived. A robot can autonomously shovel snow, collect leaves and cut
grass.
“We're trying to help people not spend time on yard work,” said Steven
Waelbers, the designer of the robot. “We want people to enjoy their free
time with their family.”
The electric robot can run by itself in right directions with the help
of two beacons (信号塔) that must be placed in the yard. The robot
includes a camera and ultrasound sensor (超声传感器) that Waelbers said
would stop quickly when it finds pets and people.
Owners of the robot will need to regulate the values stored in the
robot. Then it will confirm the task it's going to take. Before the
robot operates by itself, an owner must manually wheel it around the
yard — taking it around any obstacles like trees, bushes or mailboxes.
By doing this, the robot is taught how long and wide the lawn is, and
won't accidentally destroy your rose bush or run to the
neighborhood.
Once this setup is complete, and the $3,999 robot has been trained on
where to cut grass, rake leaves and shovel snow, it operates without any
supervision.
Waelbers has always loved to build robots and play with electronics. He
started work on a high-tech company after his father asked him to make a
robot that would shovel snow for him. Waelbers plans to start sales in
early 2017.

B.help people keep healthy and fit
C.make people enjoy family time
3、The robot would stop in front of pets and people thanks to .
A.the remote controller
B.the ultrasound sensor
C.the big and square yard
4、Which of the following steps should be done in the first place?
A.The owner must wheel the robot around the yard by himself.
B.The robot learns and stores the length and width of the lawn.
C.The robot operates the task it's going to take without
supervision.
5、Which of the following about Waelbers is TRUE?
A.He didn't love building robots when he was a young boy.
B.His father asked him to make a robot that could play balls.
C.He is starting to sell this snow-shoveling robot in early 2017.

问题 50: 23. Passage 4
In today's society, working people can seldom find time to relax
themselves in their busy schedules. They often work overtime because of
too much work waiting in queue, which ends up causing a lot of physical
and mental problems. However, more people are now aware that relaxation
and stress-relief are necessary for life. One's health should never be
sacrificed for a need to work hard. Indeed, finding time to relax makes
people work more efficiently.
Many people plan trips to spend their free time travelling with their

more common in recent years. Travelling at home and abroad has now

they are rather convenient ways to exercise and stay fit. Exercising
helps relax your body and has been shown to relieve mental stress as
well. This demand for recreation and leisure service has also stimulated
the economy, as new businesses are created to meet these needs.
In sum, working hard is important, but having a good quality of life can

问题 71: 21. Passage 5
Many people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were
five or six months old. But doctors now say babies can do that on their
first day of life. A baby will smile if his or her mother does something
the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care by smiling to please
her mother or other care givers. This is when babies learn to connect
and “talk” with other people.
Babies really talk with caregivers by learning some language skills in
the first three years when the place is rich with sounds and sights.
Scientists say children should hear the speech and language of other
people again and again. The first signs of communication happen during
the first few days of life, when a baby learns that crying will bring
food and attention.
Research shows that most children recognize the general sounds of their
native language by six months of age. By that time, a baby usually
begins to make sounds. By the end of their first year, most children are
able to say a few simple words, although they may not understand the
meaning of the words. By 18 months of age, most children are able to
make simple sentences. By ages three, four and five, the number of words
a child can understand quickly increase. It is at these ages that
children begin to understand the rules of language.

问题 72: 22. Passage 6
A class with hundreds or even thousands of students might sound like a
teacher’s worst nightmare. But a big idea in higher education these days
is Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs.
Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCs available to anyone in
the world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is
still developing. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology started its
first MOOC in 2012. The school plans to offer many free, non-credit
courses through a project called MITx. Many Chinese universities are
beginning to offer free MOOCs now too.
Nowadays, MOOCs almost cover every topic, like computer science,
technology, mechanics, engineering, languages, etc.
Generally speaking, there are no formal education requirements for these
free online courses. Students watch short videos. Then, they take
informal, ungraded quizzes after the videos each week for certain weeks.
Quizzes are part of the lecture program to keep students engaged and
keep them thinking, for students to be able to check that they
understood what was covered. They can repeatedly watch the videos and
take the quizzes whenever they want. Students receive homework. They can
join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the courses.
The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the
students have posted. They also present their own questions and
observations.
Some supporters claimed that there are things that we can do better in
the online format. We can certainly deliver high-quality education to
many students at much lower cost.

问题 73: 23. Passage 11
The term “lifelong learning” is very popular nowadays. It describes the
need for people to continue their education and training throughout
their lives. Lifelong learning is more and more important for everyone
because people are now facing different career choices in changing
economies. It is believed lifelong learning is a crucial response to the
challenges of the global knowledge economy.
Currently, most universities have reacted to the era of lifelong
learning by adding new programs and services for adults who seek to
combine employment with part-time study. Special arrangements have been
developed for these students but the core activity of the university,
providing teaching to full-time young undergraduates, often goes on much
as before.
Lifelong learning is both formal and non-formal; and the boundaries
between face-to-face teaching and distance education are increasingly
blurred.
By making learning possible anytime and anywhere, distance education is
a powerful tool for supporting lifelong learning. Technology-based
teaching is creating new educational systems that anyone from anywhere
can access. The key challenge for universities is to evolve from a
teacher-centered model of education to student-centered model. The
challenge for governments is that they have to develop new funding
approaches and new quality assessment procedures.
