13. 二、阅读理解:选择题(每题10分) Among the more colorful characters of Leadville's golden age were H.A.W. Tabor and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as “Baby Doe”. Their history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen. “Great deposits of lead are sure to be found here.” he said. As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville's fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco.『It was his custom to “grubstake” prospective miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or “grub”, while they looked for ore, in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered. He did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value. Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were persistent, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won't make any difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They picked a barren place on the mountain side and began to dig. After nine days they struck a rich vein of silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1 300 000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment. Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren hillside just outside the town for $117 000. This turned out to be even more fabulous than the Pittsburgh, yielding $35 000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later became lieutenant governor of the state. 操作提示:通过题干后的下拉框选择题目的正确答案。 Leadville got its name for the following reasons EXCEPT . The word “grubstake” in paragraph 2 means . A. to supply miners with food and supplies B. to open a general store C. to supply miners with food and supplies and in return get a share in the mine, if one was discovered 3. Tabor made his first fortune . A. by supplying two prospective miners and getting in return a one-third interest in the findings B. because he was persuaded by the two miners to quit supplying C. by buying the shares of the other 4. The underlying reason for Tabor's life career is . A. purely accidental B. based on the analysis of miner's being very poor and their possibility of discovering profitable mining site C. through the help from his second wife 5. If this passage is the first part of an article, who might be introduced in the following part? A. Tabor's life. B. Tabor's second wife, Elizabeth McCourt. C. Other colorful characters.

As for the same offenses, the court would consider an adult as a “criminal”. “Status offenders” are juveniles who commit offenses appropriate only to juveniles, such as truancy from school. Here are a few ideas to help prevent your children from being a delinquent. Keep your children in school to help prevent delinquency. Minor offenses, such as truancy, can lead to more serious offenses. Make clear to your children your expectations about their school attendance. Meet with school officials if necessary. Exercise adequate supervision. Juveniles rarely commit serious offenses while under the supervision of an adult. Seek the assistance of your local service agencies if you feel you cannot control your children. Attend parenting classes, or join a local support group if you are having trouble understanding how to exercise discipline. Educate your children about the dangers of drugs. Drug offenses and addiction can have serious consequences for your children. Let your children know you will not tolerate drug use. Stay informed about drug use trends in children. Get your children involved in after-school recreational activities, sports, community service or other positive activities. Young people with positive outlets for their energy are more likely to do well in school and avoid the problems of delinquency. Know who your children's friends are. Show an interest in your children's social life and peer groups. Peer pressure may have a bad effect on teenagers and young people. Do not allow your children to associate with juvenile delinquents. 操作提示:句子正确选择下拉选项框为“T”;句子错误选择下拉选项框为“F”。 The court would consider youthful offenders as “criminals” if they commit offenses. Demand for elderly care services in China will continue to rise due to the increasing aging population. The number of elderly people aged above 60 was over 200 million in 2012, and will be 300 million in 2025 and 400 million in 2034, according to experts. It will be a tough challenge for China to deal with, due to the increasing rates of urbanization and a decreasing birth rate. The Chinese people will be facing a big challenge if we do not have enough money when we get older. The United Nations defines an aging society as one that has 10 percent of its population at or above the age of 60. When most developed countries were classed as an aging society, their gross domestic product (GDP) per capita stood at between 5,000 to 10,000 U.S. dollars or above. However, China became an aging society in 2001, and its GDP per capita was only 1,000 U.S. dollars. It was 6,000 U.S. dollars in 2012. China’s economic foundation for an elderly society is fragile. Nowadays, MOOCs almost cover every topic, like computer science, technology, mechanics, engineering, languages, etc. Generally speaking, there are no formal education requirements for these free online courses. Students watch short videos. Then, they take informal, ungraded quizzes after the videos each week for certain weeks. Quizzes are part of the lecture program to keep students engaged and keep them thinking, for students to be able to check that they understood what was covered. They can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want. Students receive homework. They can join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the courses. The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the students have posted. They also present their own questions and observations. Some supporters claimed that there are things that we can do better in the online format. We can certainly deliver high-quality education to many students at much lower cost. 操作提示:通过题干后的下拉框选择题目的正确答案。 1. started its first MOOC in 2012. A. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology B. 117. Passage 3 There are people in Italy who can’t stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals, you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it’s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet, gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there’s the sport that glorifies “the hit”. By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still. On TV the game is fractured into a dozen perspectives, replays, close ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will contemplate the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won’t do it for you. Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base dugout and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed. His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or bring the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman’s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.” The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking of notes, chores and responses. 1.The passage is mainly concerned with. A.the attraction of baseball B.the different characteristics of sports C.the attraction of football 2.Those who don’t like baseball may complain that. A.it is only to the taste of the old B.it involves fewer players than football C.it is not exciting enough 3.The author admits that . A.baseball is too peaceful for the young B.baseball may seem boring when watched on TV C.football is more attracting than baseball 4.By stating “I could have had my eyes closed.” the author means (4th paragraph last sentence). A.The third baseman would rather sleep than play the game. B.Even if the third baseman closed his eyes a moment ago, it could make no difference to the result. C.The third baseman is so good at baseball that he could finish the game with eyes closed all the time and do his work well. 5.We can safely conclude that the author. A.likes baseball B.hates football C.hates baseball

118. Passage 4 There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action. 1.Our long-term goals mean a lot . A.if we cannot reach solid short-term goals B.if we complete the short-term goals C.if we have dreams of the future 2.New short-term goals are built upon. A.the goals that have been completed B.your achievement in a week C.current activities 3.When we complete each step of our goals, . A.we will win final success B.we are overwhelmed C.we will build up our confidence to achieve success 4.What is the main idea of this passage? A.Life is a dynamic thing. B.We should set up long-term goals. C.Different kinds of goals in life. 5.Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage? A.Life is a static thing, thus never allowing a long-term goal to limit us. B.The long-term goals cannot amount to very much without achieving short-term goals. C.The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.

119. Passage 7 In today’s society, working people can seldom find time to relax themselves in their busy schedules. They often work overtime because of too much work waiting in queue, which ends up causing a lot of physical and mental problems. However, more people are now aware that relaxation and stress-relief are necessary for life. One’s health should never be sacrificed for a need to work hard. Indeed, finding time to relax makes people work more efficiently. Many people plan trips to spend their free time travelling with their loved ones. This may have been a luxury in the past, but it has become more common in recent years. Travelling at home and abroad has now become convenient and affordable. Going jogging and going to the gym have also become more popular, as they are rather convenient ways to exercise and stay fit. Exercising helps relax your body and has been shown to relieve mental stress as well. This demand for recreation and leisure service has also stimulated the economy, as new businesses are created to meet these needs. In sum, working hard is important, but having a good quality of life can actually facilitate your success at work. Knowing when and how to relax should be a part of well-balanced lifestyle. Take a walk outdoors, visit the gym, or go jogging. You will find that your time was not wasted, even if it was not spent working in your office. 1.In today’s society, working people can often find time to relax themselves in their busy schedules. On Sept.13. 2013, the State Council issued a guideline to speed up the development of China’s elderly care services, hoping to complete a social care network for its elderly by 2025. 1.What does the word “decreasing” in Paragraph 2 mean? B.Because when China was classed as an aging society, our gross domestic product (GDP) per capita is high. C.Because of its decreasing aging population and its high GDP per capita. 5.The passage implies that. 137. Passage 5 Many people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. But doctors now say babies can do that on their first day of life. A baby will smile if his or her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care by smiling to please her mother or other care givers. This is when babies learn to connect and “talk” with other people. Babies really talk with caregivers by learning some language skills in the first three years when the place is rich with sounds and sights. Scientists say children should hear the speech and language of other people again and again. The first signs of communication happen during the first few days of life, when a baby learns that crying will bring food and attention. Research shows that most children recognize the general sounds of their native language by six months of age. By that time, a baby usually begins to make sounds. By the end of their first year, most children are able to say a few simple words, although they may not understand the meaning of the words. By 18 months of age, most children are able to make simple sentences. By ages three, four and five, the number of words a child can understand quickly increase. It is at these ages that children begin to understand the rules of language. 1.When do babies begin to learn according to doctors? A.Right after they are born. B.Not until they are five months old. C.When they are six months old. 2.Babies will smile when. A.they are wet or hungry B.they want to get the best care C.they want to talk to others 3.What do most children begin to do from age three or older?. A.Make sounds. B.Make simple sentences. C.Understand language rules. 4.If children cannot hear the speech and language of other people again and again in the first three years,. A.they will miss the right time for language learning B.they can still learn languages as the others C.it will not cause any effect on them 5.What would be the best title for the text?. A.The language of Babies B.When Do Babies Learn to Talk C. the Roles of Cry and Smile

144. 二、阅读理解:选择题(每题10分) Most couples who get married or decide to live together generally plan to have children. Several years ago, people thought that having big families was common and this was seen as an advantage. That was mainly because children began working at an early age to help provide for the family. But with the changing times and with the cost of living getting higher every single year, having a big family is no longer considered to be a practical option. In fact, more couples consider that they have only one child and some do not have any desire to become parents at all. According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, by 1986, women aged 40 to 44 years, were considerably more likely to have given birth to two children than three children (36% vs. 27%) or four or more children (19%). However, taken together, women were still more likely to have had three or more children than to have had two children (46% vs. 36%). In recent years, women were more likely to have had two children than three or more children – a trend that was most marked in the most recent period (38% vs. 25% in 1996; 38% vs. 22% in 2006). These days, most families in Australia have two children. But the number of women who had given birth to a single child increased progressively from only 8% in 1981 to 13% in 2006. The U.S. Census Bureau states that there are approximately 14 million only children in America today. This comprises 20% of the children's population compared to only 10% around fifty years ago. 操作提示:通过题干后的下拉框选择题目的正确答案。 Several years ago, people thought that having big families was A. uncommon and this was seen as an advantage B. common and this was seen as a disadvantage C. common and this was seen as an advantage 2.
